The Area

The Newcastle and Mourne area is renowned for it’s natural beauty. The Mountains of Mourne are widely acknowledged as being among the most spectacular scenery on the Island of Ireland. They also offer a variety of activities such as walking, cycling horse riding, rock climbing and scenic drives.

Newcastle itself is proud to show off its award winning new promenade, with the majestic mountains in the background.

Places to visit:

Silent Valley: the dam provides up to 30 million gallons of water per day. You can enjoy splendid scenery; woodland walks with a visit to the exhibition centre and restaurant.

Kilkeel: the capital of the ancient kingdom of Mourne, and the hub of the local farming and fishing industry. The harbour is a hive of activity and boasts the largest fishing fleet in Ireland.

Downpatrick: the county town and home of the reputed burial site of St. Patrick. At the St. Patrick Centre you can enjoy a virtual helicopter ride called. “In St. Patrick’s footsteps” presenting an authentic view of the saint through his own words.

The golfing enthusiast will be spoiled for choice in this Mourne area, with more than twelve golf courses within 20 miles of Newcastle.

Imagine teeing off where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the seas at Royal County Down, the finest golf course in Ireland, and one of the World's Top Ten.

Tollymore and Castlewellan are two magnificent Forest parks close by.  Both offer a variety of activities such as way-marked trails, peace maze, horse riding, picnic and barbecue areas.
